The book describes how to call upon Anubis in person. The experiment is a success but the Egyptologist, a man of science, refuses to believe it without proof. He thus proposes that his friend put to Anubis a question that science has not been able yet to answer, about a series of satirical drawings of astonishing scenes of animals behaving like human beings: dogs attacking a town of cats- cats serving a queen-mouse, or hunting, or playing music.

Anubis answer involves his disciple (and the reader) in a formidable adventure -- into the heart of old Egypt, its gods and its legends -- whose account and surprising consequences disturb the Egyptologists rationalism.
